ELYRIA — The ambulance chasers Tuesday morning carried guns and badges, not law degrees.
About 3:30 a.m. outside the emergency room entrance at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, 630 E. River St., a man stole a LifeCare ambulance, police said. Herb de la Porte, LifeCare vice president, said two ambulances had just dropped off patients when a man jumped into the driver’s seat of one of the ambulances. When the man realized paramedic Angela Maines was in the passenger seat, de la Porte said the man got in the empty ambulance and drove off.
A short chase involving police, Maines and another paramedic ensued. De la Porte said the man abandoned the Ford Crestline ambulance on Taylor Street and ran away. Police said they have identified the man from surveillance video, but he remained at large Tuesday night.
De la Porte said an ambulance was briefly stolen earlier this year in Lorain, but the two thefts were the only he could recall since he began working at LifeCare in 1986.
“It’s an ambulance, for crying out loud,” he said. “You don’t steal ambulances. It’s stupid. Beyond stupid.”
